What Is a Boletín Eléctrico in Spain and When Do You Need One?

21 Aug, 2026 MaciekFeniksAdmin

If you own a property in Spain, sooner or later you may come across the term “Boletín Eléctrico”. But what exactly is it, when is it required and who can issue it? Here is a simple explanation.

01. What is a Boletín Eléctrico?

A Boletín Eléctrico, officially known as the Certificado de Instalación Eléctrica (CIE), is a document certifying an electrical installation.

It contains technical information about the installation and confirms that it complies with the applicable requirements at the time the certificate is issued.

It is an important document for properties in Spain and may be required when dealing with electricity suppliers or making certain changes to the electrical supply.

02. When might you need a Boletín Eléctrico?

A new or updated electrical certificate may be required in situations such as:

  • registering a new electricity supply,
  • reconnecting electricity after a long period without service,
  • increasing the contracted electrical power,
  • making significant modifications to the electrical installation,
  • or when the electricity supplier or distributor requests an updated certificate.

Whether a new certificate is necessary depends on the property, the existing installation and the documentation already available.

03. Who can issue a Boletín Eléctrico?

A Boletín Eléctrico cannot simply be prepared by anyone carrying out electrical work.

The installation must be checked by an authorised electrical installer who is qualified to certify electrical installations.

The electrician checks the condition of the installation and verifies whether it meets the requirements necessary for certification.

If problems are found, they may need to be corrected before the certificate can be issued.

04. What does the electrician check?

Depending on the installation, the inspection can include:

  • the electrical distribution board,
  • protective devices,
  • wiring and circuits,
  • earthing,
  • electrical power supported by the installation,
  • and other safety-related elements.

Older properties may require modifications before a new certificate can be issued.

This does not automatically mean that the entire electrical installation has to be replaced. The necessary work depends on its actual condition.

05. Why is the Boletín important?

The Boletín is not just another piece of paperwork.

It provides technical information about the electrical installation and may be necessary to complete procedures with the electricity supplier or distributor.

For the property owner, it also provides confirmation that the installation has been inspected for the purpose of certification.
