01. First step: Contact your electricity supplier
The first step is to contact your electricity supplier and request an increase in contracted power.
How does it work? If you already have a valid electrical certificate (Boletín Eléctrico / CIE) and it allows a higher power level, the supplier can normally process the increase.
In some older installations, it may be necessary to modify or replace certain protective devices, but in many cases no major electrical work is required.
02. What if the supplier requires a new electrical certificate?
If the existing documentation does not allow the requested power increase, the electrical installation may need to be inspected.
You will need a qualified electrician authorised to certify electrical installations in Spain.
The electrician will:
- inspect the electrical installation,
- check whether it complies with current requirements,
- determine whether it can safely support the requested power,
- identify any modifications that may be necessary,
- and, when everything complies, issue the required electrical certificate.
03. What if modifications are necessary?
Older installations do not always meet the requirements needed for a higher electrical power level.
Depending on the condition of the installation, the work may include:
- modifications inside the electrical distribution board,
- replacement or adjustment of protective devices,
- upgrading parts of the electrical installation,
- or work related to the supply line between the meter and the property, depending on the specific situation.

Once the required modifications have been completed and the installation complies with the applicable requirements, the new Boletín Eléctrico / CIE can be prepared and the power increase can proceed.
